Four uncapped Loughborough Lightning players added to Red Roses squad

Four uncapped Loughborough Lightning players have been called up into the England squad this week.

Amelia Williams, Haineala Lutui, Lia Green and Carmela Morrall have all been added to the Red Roses’ camp, where they will join Lightning teammates Lilli Ives Campion, Sadia Kabeya, Emily Scarratt and Helena Rowland.

Loosehead prop Williams, aged 20, received Lightning’s Young Player of the Season award as she featured in 11 of the club’s 16 Premiership Women’s Rugby games.

Morrall, 20, made 13 appearances in the 2024/25 campaign in the centres, moving her to within nine of a half century for the club. Fly-half/fullback Green, also 20, made five outings for the African Violets this term.

Number eight Lutui, aged 18, missed the majority of the season while recovering from knee surgery but made an impactful return in BUCS action and was an unused replacement in the PWR final round success over Trailfinders Women.

Lightning head coach Nathan Smith said: “We are extremely proud that five of the eight players we have in the latest England squad have come through the pathway here at Loughborough.

“In the cases of Lia and Carmela, they were ‘day oners’, having played in my very first friendly with Lightning two years ago and it’s great to see their talents acknowledged in this way.

“This is a great development opportunity for Lia, Carmela, Amelia and Haineala to go away and learn from the very best from across the country.

“Hopefully they will come back all the better for the experience as they return for the crucial BUCS run-in and moving forward with Loughborough Lightning too.”

Players from Gloucester-Hartpury and Saracens are unavailable for the camp due to their involvement in the Premiership Women’s Rugby final on Sunday 16 March, presenting an opportunity for emerging pathway players, and those who have impressed in the PWR, to receive a call-up.

“We want to expose some of the developing future talent, and those who have performed well in the league, to the Red Roses environment,” England head coach John Mitchell said.

“Their inclusion will not only aid their understanding of what it takes to become a Red Rose but will also prove beneficial for their development and the squad’s Guinness Women’s Six Nations preparations.”

On the pathway players included, Head of Women’s Performance Charlie Hayter added: “It is a fantastic opportunity for the girls coming in from the pathway to experience a senior international environment.

“The pathway is designed for aspirational players to maximise their potential and we believe exposing this group to the Red Roses will inspire and equip them to do so.”
