Looking for their third straight home victory, Saints nearly secured the win as Newcastle Falcons came to town - leading 14-6 at the hour mark - only for Mark Wilson to deny them with an injury-time score.
Falcons led early on through two Toby Flood penalties but Saints hit back and Cobus Reinach added a sixth try to his tally for the season with some impressive solo work.
And the scrum-half would double his tally after the break - consolidating his place as Saints' top try scorer so far this season - but Falcons would not let up and with the clock in the red Wilson scored against the posts, with Flood's conversion sealing the win for the northern side.
