Krissy Scurfield reflects on her four-try show against Sale

‘All I had to do was run’, was Krissy Scurfield’s modest summary of her four-try masterclass in Loughborough Lightning’s 50-7 victory at Sale Sharks.

The Canadian winger lit up the CorpAcq Stadium with an astonishing display of finishing prowess, with three of her efforts originating from inside her own half.

Scurfield was quick to heap praise on her teammates as Lightning secured their biggest winning margin in more than a year-and-a-half of action.

“We had been practicing a lot in the week to try and get as many points as we can on the board and get that extra five points for the league, so we are happy with the result,” she said.

“Big props [respect] to our centres and our whole back line, we have been putting in a lot of work in opening up the gaps for our wingers, so big props to them, they opened up the space for me and all I had to do was run.”

Kathryn Treder mauled her way to two tries and was followed over the line by Alev Kelter and Christine Belisle, as Lightning closed the gap on Trailfinders Women in sixth to five points with six rounds of the Premiership Women’s Rugby 2024/25 season remaining.

“Our mauls were incredible, our forwards have done a great job,” Scurfield added. “We had some good turnovers and our defensive game was good. So going into this next block after Christmas, we need to bring in the confidence that we played with against Sale against some of the top four teams will be huge.”

Scurfield arrived at Loughborough earlier this year while she recovered from a lacerated kidney suffered during Canada’s second Sevens match of the Paris Olympic Games.

Her quartet of scores in Manchester took Scurfield to seven tries in as many games, a remarkable haul for the 21-year-old as she transitions from a Sevens star into an eye-catching talent in the 15-a-side game.

“I am super happy, this is my first season with Lightning and we are building every week,” she said. “The confidence is growing week by week and hopefully we can get some big wins against some top four teams and end the season with some wins under our belt.”
