Edwards: Errors proving the difference for Lightning

Director of Rugby Rhys Edwards has challenged his Loughborough Lightning side to cut down their error count and be more efficient at getting out of their own half ahead of this weekend’s home clash against DMP Sharks.

Lightning were beaten 46-12 by top-of-the-table Gloucester-Hartpury last weekend – but were in touch with the league leaders just before the interval at 17-12.

Ultimately, five further tries from the Cherry and Whites with no reply from Loughborough saw the home side end with a commanding victory.

Edwards’ side will be looking to notch up their second win of the Allianz Premier 15s campaign this Saturday when they host DMP Sharks, and he is clear on where the side need to make improvements.

“Last weekend was obviously quite a difficult result for us,” Edwards said. “I think the scoreboard probably reflects the reality of what the game was like.

“It was pretty competitive in the first half, we had a couple of opportunities to keep the score closer.

“But in that second half, there were quite a few errors from us which Gloucester capitalised on, and that was the difference.

“They were very physical throughout, but ultimately they were accurate when they needed to be, and they put us to the sword a few times.

“We’ve got to challenge ourselves now, we’ve got to get better at getting out of our own half.

“Throughout the season so far, when we do manage to get into our opposition’s half, our strike rate is pretty good but we need to be doing that more.”
