Northampton Saints Wheelchair Rugby has been named the Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby (GBWR) Club of the Month for February.
Saints Wheelchair Rugby was initially formed back in 2016 and has both adult and junior sessions taking place each week. To date, the club has 22 full GBWR members, along with ten volunteers and 15 junior players.
Head Coach Jamie Higgins said: “We are so grateful to be recognised as the Club of the month by GBWR. We create a real community feel at the club and that is our aim first and foremost. Through that we have found a club and group of players and volunteers that inspire a real team spirit, which has in turn brought a successful competitive edge to the club.”
Higgins also now works alongside GBWR and Northampton Saints to deliver national junior programmes.
As well as competing in the Premiership League of wheelchair rugby, Saints also have a development side to ensure their newer and developing players can compete as well. In 2022, the club also travelled to Poland to compete in the first international wheelchair rugby fives tournament against the top two teams in the Polish Leagues.
Alongside the achievements of the team on the court, the club have also developed a host of referees and table officials, which is invaluable to the game. These include both Gary Spratt and Jo Montgomery who have both assisted at recent national and international tournaments as table officials. Abby Montgomery has also been refereeing at GB tournaments ad overseas gaining noticeable confidence as she develops into an experienced official.
