Northampton Saints’ Community team is jetting off to new territory to deliver a project in a South American rugby hotbed.
A three-day camp is being hosted by Marista Rugby Club in Mendoza, Argentina in partnership with Sudamerica Coaching.
It will be the fourth time Saints Community has teamed up with Sudamerica Coaching and Juan Gonzalez Mendia, having also successfully worked together in Chile, Singapore and Italy.
The camp is targeting local players aged from seven to 17 and will be delivered to promote the coaching of Northampton Saints as well as embracing the culture and skill of the local players.
Host club Marista is one of Argentina’s biggest rugby clubs boasting more than 1,500 members. Formed in 1961, it has played a key role in the development of a number of players who have reached the top of the game, including former Saints and Pumas international Matías Cortese and current Saracens and Argentine back row, Juan Martín González.
The Saints coaching team, made up of Ben Lawrence, Mark Satterthwaite and Josh Barton, will be looking to unearth some potential talent to replicate the likes of Federico Mendez (#1739 - pictured above), Martin Scelzo (#1747), Matías Cortese (#1838), Ignacio Fernández Lobbe (#1861) and Juan Pablo Estelles (#1975) as previous Pumas to have worn the Black, Green and Gold.
“There’s already a strong rugby connection between Northampton Saints and Argentina, through this camp we’re hoping to pull even closer,” said Saints Community manager Ben Lawrence.
“We’re delighted to be working with Marista Rugby Club and alongside Juan [Gonzalez Mendia] as we continue to build our links across the globe and strengthen our commitment to grow the game of rugby union.”
The three-day camp runs from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 of December.
