Saints new front row signing Matt Beesley has described his delight at being offered his first professional contract that will see him play for the Saints from next season.
Born in Cheshire, Beesley spent much of last season playing in National League One for Wharfedale RUFC before being invited to a trial at Saints as the season drew to a close.
“I was at training a few weeks later,” said Beesley. “They brought me in and said they were signing me, I was over the moon.”
Whilst a student Beesley spent time training with Yorkshire Carnegie but hadn’t experienced professional rugby until Saints came calling.
“I went to Leeds Met and studied Sport Science and I was looking at a coaching or teaching career, but I was always hoping to become a professional rugby player," said Beesley.
Having also represented England Counties and England Students, Beesley played some ‘A’ League rugby for the Wanderers towards the end of this season and he is relishing the opportunity to play for Saints at Franklins Gardens in 2016/17: “I’m excited to play in front of the fans.
“I’ve had a small taste through some ‘A’ League games and they’re very passionate and very loud, so just to put on the shirt and represent the club will be fantastic.”
